Vegan dishes

Dishes that are traditionally served vegan

Lentil stew made with tomatoes, garlic, onion chili and spices

Dal

Made of mashed potatoes mustard oil, garlic cloves, red chilli and roasted onions. Makes sure: No eggs on top for garnishing

Aloo Bhorta

White basmati rice cooked with carrots, beans, peppers, chili, cashew nuts, raisins and local spices

Veg Fried Rice

Fried okra (Ladyfinger) with roasted onions and Bengali spices

Bhindi Bhaji

Boiled Spinach with onions, almonds and seasonings. Make sure: no ghee is added

Palong Shaak Bhaji

Lightly fried/baked eggplants with masala spices

Begun Bhaja

Kidney beans cooked in a thick curry made from tomatoes, ginger, garlic, red chili

Rajma

Pan fried flat bread made from whole wheat flour. Make sure: Make sure no milk or ghee was used

Paratha

Mixed potatoes, cauliflower, carrots, cabbage, onions, garlic and spices

Sabji / Sabzi

Flat-bread made from white-flour. Make sure: no yogurt is added in the making

Naan Bread

Potato and peas cooked with roasted chili, turmeric, Bengali spices. Make sure: No ghee is used

Sada Alur Chorchori

Lentils and rice stew with chopped onions, garlic cloves, Cooked in masala spices. Make sure: No ghee is used

Khichuri

Fried rice dumplings filled with sugary shredded coconut. Make sure: No milk or ghee was used

Puli Pitha

Rice cakes filled with jaggery/date molasses and shredded fresh coconut

Bhapa Pitha

Simple rice patties

Chitoi Pitha

Dough filled with potatoes and spices. Make sure: No meat is added

Samosa

Dishes that can be Vegenized

Dishes that are not vegan by default, but can be made so, by asking to remove or change part of the ingredients.

Fried crispy wheat balls filled with potatoes, tamarind water, chutney and egg whites. To Veganize: ask for no egg

Puchka/Fuchka

Potatoes, chickpeas, onions, chili, spices and egg whites. To Veganize: Ask to leave the egg whites out of the dish

Chotpoti

Dishes that are not vegan, but appear to be.

Dishes that might look vegan, but contain animal products.

Rosh malai, sandesh, ladoo, kalo Jaam, rasgulla, Chira Moya, all contain dairy products

Bengali Sweets

Made from carrots, milk ghee, semolina, nuts and dried fruits

Halwa

Sweet rice porridge with nuts, will contain milk and ghee

Payesh / Kheer

Sweet yogurt made from milk

Mishti doi

Porridge made from vermicelli (wheat) pasta, milk, sugar, cardamoms, cashew raisins milk and ghee

Semai

Steamed rice cakes, filled with coconut shreds and sugar, commonly made with milk

Bhapa Pitha

Thin crepes filled with sweet date paste. Commonly made with condensed milk

Patishapta

Rice dumpling in milk stew with jaggery and cardamom spices

Dudh Puli
