Vegan culture is not common in Azerbaijan. People still look upon vegans and vegan culture as something strange.
National Azerbaijani cuisine mostly contains meat and dairy products. You can find some great salads and a few other vegan dishes in regular restaurants (check our LOCAL FOOD page) but be aware that vegetable dishes advertised as such may be fried with meat fat, so make sure to ask.
As English is not the country’s second language (Russian is), you will not find lots of eateries with menus in English. Print out our VEGAN WORDS page to make yourself understood.
The good news is that in the past few years, vegan culture has grown and there are more vegan and vegetarian restaurants opening in the capital, Baku, every year.
