Vegan Tour in Jeju Island S. Korea With Matt
Tour Options
Since I am representing Jeju island, the tours would not necessarily be confined to a particular city.
Here are my suggested vegan tour options in Jeju island:
Traditional Korean
We would start our tour in a traditional 5 Day (farmers) Market and walk down the lanes of open stalls with local farmers selling their goods. We could pick out some local Jeju fruit to eat as a snack. Then we would continue to Taranbansang, Jeju’s best traditional Korean buffet (vegan). The buffet recreates vegan versions of many classic Korean dishes that would normally have meat. We would then continue to a traditional Korean Tea House that serves only Temple Food (vegan), the food eaten by local Buddhist monks.
Jeju Cafe Hopper
The second tour would focus on Jeju’s massive cafe scene- vegan style. One of the first impressions visitors get of Jeju island is the incredible amount of cafes and coffee shops. We would walk across the local streets and explore three different cafes, all 100% vegan. We can sample different foods in each. The last cafe has a great ocean shore view, so we can watch the sunset on the beach.
Meet Matt
Why I became vegan
I come from a sustainability background from majoring in environmental science in school and I quickly became acutely aware of the negative impact of the meat industry, especially factory farming, had on the planet. Meat production has a massive environmental footprint, contributing to land and water degradation, biodiversity loss, acid rain, coral reef degradation, and deforestation. It is also a major contributor to climate change.
But believe it or not, it wasn’t the science that made me go vegan. It was my emotions. What convinced me was watching revealing documentaries of the practices that go into creating the piece of beef I saw at the supermarket. It was removing the corporate veil of the whole meat and dairy process and really understanding exactly what steps go into making the food lands on my plate and asking myself if my diet choices really aligned with my values of love and compassion. After listening to a couple of friends talk about their experience becoming vegan, I gradually made the changes to live a plant-based life.
After moving to Jeju Island, South Korea I had to face some real challenges of relearning how to eat vegan in a predominantly meat-based culture. I have made it my mission to document what I learn along this journey to pave the way for future ex-pats to live a vegan lifestyle while on Jeju.
