Animals commonly seen in the wild

Marine fauna:

Carps, sturgeons, trout, salmons, eels, pikes.

Birds:

Partridges, pheasants, wild geese, ducks, raptors, owls, bee-eaters.

Land mammals:

Bears, wolves, lynx, wildcats, marmots, otters, martens, minks.

Snakes and insects:

Sand lizards, green lizards, Aesculapian snake, dice snakes, grass snakes, meadow vipers, beetles.

Common sights you will not like

In the city and

Stray cats and dogs can be seen on the streets.

In the
Countryside

Dog sled racing is a favorite traditional winter sport in Slovakia. International competitions of the sport are often held in the country. Dogs chained up can be seen occasionally.

Hunting or poaching:

Hunting is allowed. Commonly hunted animals are wild boars, deer, mouflons, chamois, bears and wolves.

Animal fights:

Due to the illegal dog breeding, dog fights happen in the country. Though forbidden, the law is not enforced. A dog micro-chipping law is under consideration.
