Cai bao 菜包

Sweet soy bean curd pudding made from soy milk

Tau Huay / Dou Hua 豆花

Steamed rice cakes with preserved turnip, topped with a sweet black sauce

Chwee Kueh 水粿

"Alkaline Dumpling" A sweet dessert made with glutinous rice and filled with red bean paste or coconut palm sugar syrup

Kee Chang

Iced dessert made from Pandan leaves, mung bean flower, coconut milk and sugar

Cendol

Steamed wheat dough dumplings filled with spinach, mushrooms, and rice noodles. Make sure: no eggs or prawns filling

Vegetable Dimsum

A dessert made with glutinous rice and sweet coconut topping. Make sure: no butter is added

Dishes that are not vegan by default, but can be made so, by asking to remove or change part of the ingredients.

Tea soup with rice, peanuts, mint and coriander. Served with veggie and anchovies. To veganize: ask for no fish or shrimps

Lei Cha

Fresh spring rolls with fillings such as beans, shallots and meat or shrimp. To veganize: ask for no meat or shrimp or fish sauce

Popiah

Fried tofu with bean sprouts, cucumber and scallion. Served with shrimp paste. To veganize: ask for soy sauce instead

Tahu Goreng

Jackfruit stew made with eggs, coconut milk, palm sugar and spices. To veganize: ask for no egg

Gudeg

Rice in coconut milk with veggies, fish or chicken and fish sauce. To veganize: ask for no fish, meat, and use soy sauce

Nasi Lemak

Noodles, veggies, eggs and shredded chicken. Fish sauce. To veganize: ask for no chicken or egg and no fish sauce

Mee Siam

Tofu with either noodles, vegetables, meat and fish paste. To veganize: ask for no meat and use soy sauce

Yong Tau Foo

Rice with side dishes such as vegetables, meat or fish. To veganize: choose the vegan toppings and no fish sauce or paste

Economy Rice

Shaved ice topped with red beans, jelly, peanuts,sweet corn, with syrups, some with milk. To veganize: ask for no milk

Ice Kacang

Indian rice-based dish made with spices and veggies . Ghee may also be used. To veganize: ask for no ghee

Vegetarian Biryani

Stir-fried vegetables with noodles. Shrimps and chicken broth are used. To veganize: ask for no shrimps or chicken broth

Chap Chai

Stir fried morning glory, fried with shrimp paste or fish sauce. To veganize: ask to fry in oil. Use soy sauce instead

Stir-fried kang kong

Dishes that are not vegan, but appear to be

Dishes that might look vegan, but contain animal products.

Rice cakes wrapped in banana leaf and served with veggies and hard-boiled egg. The broth is made with shrimps paste

Lontong

Coconut jam and butter on a toasted bread served as a breakfast. The kaya (coconut jam) contains eggs

Kaya Toast

Chinese fried dough sticks, usually made with eggs and milk

You Tiao

A fried potato patty. Usually contains egg, and sometimes even meat
