Vegan dishes

Dishes that are traditionally served vegan

Sliced deep-fried plantains, served with different dips or as a side dish. Make sure: no cheese is served on the side

Patacones

Toasted large corn kernels with salt usually sold as a snack or a side dish

Maiz tostado/ Chancha

Bean stew made with tomatoes and spices, served with rice/ plantain/ eggs/ meat. Make sure: no meat or eggs are added

Menestra

Thin Plantain chips with salt and pepper, served as a snack or as a side dish. Make sure: not to add Cecina (pork)

Chifle

Deep fried dough sticks sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon, with dips. Make sure: choose the plain version

Churros

Currants and mangoes with salt sold as a street food snack

Mangos/ Grosellas con sal

Cooked lupini beans with salt and spices, usually sold as a street food snack or as a side dish

Chochos

Base sauce used in different dishes and made from stir fried onions, garlic and spices

Sofrito

Alcoholic fermented drink made from cassava

Chicha

Alcoholic drink made from Aguardiente, sugar and cinnamon

Canelazo

Dishes that can be Veganized

Dishes that are not vegan by default, but can be made so, by asking to remove or change part of the ingredients.

Fried salted potatoes, served with sausage, mayonnaise and tomato onion salsa. To veganize: ask for no meat or mayo

Salchipapas

Fruit salad with juice, topped with whipped cream and/or honey. To veganize: ask for no cream and no honey

Fried plantain dumplings filled with cheese or meat To veganize: ask to prepare without cheese/ meat

Bolon de verde

Dishes that are not vegan, but appear to be.

Dishes that might look vegan, but contain animal products.

Fried dough dumplings sprinkled with sugar, usually filled with cheese

Empanadas de viento

Fried doughnut holes sprinkled with sugar, usually made with milk and butter

Huevitos chilenos

Fruit (usually guava) based meringue cream dessert, made with egg whites

Espumillas

Sweet coconut bark, usually contains milk

Cocada

Green banana creamy soup made with milk

Repe

Fried stuffed potato patties, usually with cheese

Llapingachos

Cassava round shaped bread, usually made with cheese

Pan de yuca

Traditional potato soup, usually made with milk/cheese
