Animals commonly seen in the wild

Marine fauna:

Whales, sharks, dolphins, turtles, seals.

Birds:

Parrots, cockatoos, ibises, cormorans, emus.

Land mammals:

Kangaroos, Koalas, dingoes, wombats, platypus, flying foxes.

Snakes and insects:

Pythons, adders, eastern brown snakes, tiger snakes, dragon flies, scarabs.

Common sights you will not like

In the city and
on the road

Animals transported in trucks for live export can be seen. Stray dogs and cats uncommon (average of 2 stray dogs per 1000 inhabitants). Horse drawn carriages used by tourists in the Melbourne. Horse and greyhound racing.

In the
Countryside

Uncommon

Hunting or poaching:

Laws differ from state to state however, animals classified as “pests” can be hunted in most states. This may include, rabbits, ducks, dogs, cats or foxes. Most states require a permit or license to hunt.

Animal fights:

Illegal but underground dog fighting rings do exist.
